The 3-Legged Dog, A Trial Lawyer Who Has Epiphanies and Lifting from the Legs

Bentley is 10 years old, has only 3 legs and, unlike the other canines in the shelter, wasn't doing anything to sell himself.

After 20 years away from animal rescue, I knew I had to spring into action. Bentley probably sensed the importance of the meet-and-greet and made the smart pawing/licking moves. Off he was to the sofa in his forever home on December 4, 2025.

Maybe it was the adrenaline rush of getting sprung from the shelter. Whatever. He had no initial trouble with the 7 steps from my apartment to the outside. Then he did.

It was obvious that I would have to relocate to true ground floor housing. But there were 2 things. 1) I was not ready to pull up these just-planted rootlings and 2) I would have to pony up 2 months rent to exit the lease prematurely. That would be on the top of the purchase of a car, pricey dental work and just last week paying back the IRS for the $1,400 + interest that was sent to me in 2025 in error.

I did tarot card spreads on this keep-you-up-too-many-nights situation. Over and over again The Chariot card would appear.

It symbolizes having confidence in there being a solution. Don't hold on too tight. Sometimes that's called The Sacred Pause. Stop. Let the universe open its secrets to you.

Simultaneously I recalled (A Jungian I believe there are no coicidences) an article I read in 2010. That was when I was coaching junior lawyers struggling to find a soft landing during the fallout from The Great Recession.

It was in SuperLawyers. The subject was how iconic litigation lawyer Brad Karp at law firm Paul, Weiss approaches cases. This quote stuck with me:

“'You cannot take anything for granted,' Karp says of representing financial giants. 'In difficult matters, I will think about my clients’ problems night and day until a solution emerges. I’m a big believer in late-night epiphanies.'”

I plugged into that mystical force field of knowing there is a solution.

Paused, the epiphany came to me.

I could lift Bentley and carry him up the 7 stairs. Not easy, though.

I'm five feet and "at my age" don't have a lot of upper body strength. But, again there are no coincidences. I also recalled a former baseball star telling me: Jane, lift from the legs, not the back. You can hoist an elephant.

So, I'm off the hook for early-lease-termination penalty. This situation, though, has an amazing silver lining. Since we will have to move any way, Bentley and I can position and package this as an adventure. Today we drove around looking at ground floor apartments. Then, another ephiphany: No need to stay local. No longer is a romance keeping me here.

Yes, fresh start, after a broken heart. In the spirit of that I deactivated my Facebook page. The 2 of us can be anyone we want in our next.
