Bill Gates and More: Who Is Forgiven?
Globally, the players at the top of heap are dropping like flies. That is, a result of the Epstein files. There have even been two arrests in the UK. Might there be a suicide as there had been in the 1960s John Profumo sex/national security scandal?
But, the focus is on which Friends of Jeffrey will be forgiven. That is, enough to open the possibility of a comeback. That return to grace could range from regaining some kind of title to full reputational restoration. The latter was accomplished by Wall Street tycoon Michael Milkin. His misconduct was so bad that not even the elite lawyers at Paul, Weiss couldn't prevent his serving a prison term.
Right now, given Bill Gates' town hall mea culpa about two outside-his-marriage affairs with Russian women and traveling places with Friend Jeffrey (but he never stayed overnight), the spotlight is on him. The comments following The Wall Street Journal coverage are primarily negative about this guy. Most rejoice at the hits he's taking. There are, though, exceptions such as:
"Heck, Bill is pretty clean with Epstein. It is good that he
recognizes his mistakes and not trying to denying them. I wish others have the
courages [sic] to come forward and apologize. Most importantly, they should learn the
mistakes and move on."
The odds are that he will fade from the scene and not come back. Sure, though, good causes will still accept his money. Just like another Friend of Jeffrey Leon Black he likely can't directly represent noble pursuits. Black stepped down from chairing the board at the Museum of Modern Art.
Not coming back also probably will be former big names ranging from Larry Summers to Casey Wasserman to Kathy Ruemmler.
But there is runway in the hearts and minds for others caught up in the web.
At the top of the list is long-time "savior" of progressive Bard College Leon Botstein. Right now law firm WilmerHale is investigating his relationship with the monster and how donations are vetted. He could come out of this simply chastised but retaining his position, as well as his ability to keep the college rolling.
Another poignant figure who could be allowed to reset is superlawyer and former chair of Paul, Weiss Brad Karp. The public opinion out there about his behavior with Epstein is mixed.
Karp is well-liked. He has treated a lot of ordinary people such as myself with respect, even kindness. His track record for progressive causes is impressive. But, most importantly, he has the skill sets, be they lawyering, political fundraising and/or overall strategy, to forge an identity separate from the organization at which he's been a lifer. The obstacle is: Is this guy willing to start over at age 66?
Since Bill Clinton also is highly likable, he is positioned to just continue being a known rascal. Nothing much more to see there.
In coaching and doing tarot readings I have observed this: The impediment to a comeback is the inability to forgive oneself. Capitalism is based on individualism. Succeed. You own the glory. Fall off the track and you own the disgrace. That's the way it is.
How to forgive yourself? I guide clients to look around and notice that we're all a bunch of screwups. That DNA dates back to Adam and Eve who blew such a good deal.
