Success Powerhouse Tool: Detachment

In the tarot, a major card is The Chariot.

It's major because it symbolizes detachment. The character depicted is not micromanaging. Instead, there's a deep confidence that things, including the direction of the transportation vehicle, will go the right way. If not, there's also deep confidence in being able to establish a fresh direction. Notice the animals helping to lead the way are calm.

You may have observed that this emotional cluster dominates many of those who not only achieve their goals but can hold onto that success. Yes, they take things seriously. But not too seriously. They approach the whatevers without ego, fear of loss or obsession. When it's time to course correct on a journey they do that without the drama of great agitation. That reassures constituencies.

Some professionals who operate with detachment are just put together that way. The classic example has been Abraham Lincoln. At a very difficult time in American history his non-attachment to personal popularity, one-dimensional self-righteousness and an absolutist sense of self attracted support for tough national decisions. That detachment style was exhibited in easing tensions with funny stories.

Others learn to detach. Typically that's after a professional setback such as not getting a promotion or being fired, a bout of bad health and/or a personal loss such as the death of a partner or a child. Their next embodies not taking anything too seriously, not clinging to expected outcomes and accepting reality for what it is.

On professional anonymous networks Reddit, Fishbowl, Blind and Glassdoor there are the postings about those kinds of 180s. Seemingly there's a shift to seeming effortless success. Like the man in The Chariot things start to go in the right direction. When not, modifications can be made without upheaval.

If you "want what they have" - that is detachment - the path there includes prayer and meditation. That quiets what's called in Buddhism the "monkey mind." In 12-step programs that's labeled the "committee in your head." Athletes refer to it as "clearing the channel. They no longer are preoccupied with watching the fans watch them.

Most communities currently have meditation centers. Since 2008 I have been attending the Zen Buddhist temples in cities such as New Haven, Connecticut and Toledo, Ohio. Meditation practices are also available online.
