Mysticism of Catholic Confession: Tarot Readings, 12-Step Programs, Privileged Conferences with Lawyers Create Same Force Field

 The New York Times documents that there are still some Catholics who participate in the sacrament of Confession, at least once year. Not many, though: only 23%. 

But, they are among a large number of those who believe in the mystical ritual of earnestly sharing one's wrongdoings with another human being. So many of my tarot clients come to me for the same reason. That is, relief from the bondage of wrongdoing. No one has confessed murder or a serious crime so there are no ethical implications. The next after the telling is providing "permission" for them to forgive themselves. That's a big problem in America: self-forgiveness. After all, our roots are Puritan. 

The fifth step in the Alcoholics Anonymous 12 step program also facilitates that kind of liberating sharing. The fourth step guides how to prepare. Although there are no mandates in AA there is the strong suggestion that if the confession isn't done the probability is high of relapsing back into problem drinking. But make sure it is in a protected safe setting. For example, if done in an AA meeting per se, criminal action can be and has been taken. 

And, there are the well-paid Father Confessors of the legal sector. That is, those who belong to the defense bar. They are the partners at Paul, Weiss, Skadden, Kirkland & Ellis, Simpson and more. Their right to treat those sharings as privileged, that is, kept as confidential, can bestow the same kind of relief that so many Catholics used to derive from going to Confession once a week. That ritual was also and still is a confidential exchange.

 As a devout Catholic in my youth, I recall exiting the confessional box feeling like I was walking on air. My tarot clients report the same experience. Those in 12 step programs, while admitting it was difficult doing the fifth step, also feel pretty good afterward. The belief is that the wreckage of the past can be let go. Simply finding the right defense lawyer can in itself be a source of euphoria.

  The Wall Street Journal fingers retirement for the epidemic of a loss of self among the aging.  However, the process can kick in as soon as anyone senses they are no longer young. We Are All Paul Weiss - And Now We Are Different

 Paul Weiss has been the tipping point.  The Executive Order by the current administration - the third issued - got to us. How vulnerable we all are to power. Forget the grade school lessons about what America is about. Forget how university deans caved during our counterculture protests.  Yes, and forget "rights"  as being sacred. Here's what we now know.
