Bentley The Escape Artist - It Takes a Village

 Look at Bentley.


He exudes contentment. The photo was taken three days ago when I adopted this fellow at the Toledo Humane Society. Also, because of an accident years ago he has only three legs. In addition, he's 10 years old. 

So, when the adoption counselor was briefing me on Bentley's background I didn't pay much attention to this bit of info: He is an escape artist. 

I should have.

About three this afternoon we were driving home from visiting the part of Lake Erie (lots of waves) in Geneva on the Lake. Then, it was time for a walk for Bentley and coffee for me.  I pulled off I-90 West and headed to one of those convenience stores. 

As I was opening the car door and ready to put Bentley back on the leash he leaped out. Across a four lane highway. Up a country road. Into the woods. And heading back to the four lane highway. Leash in hand, I raced after him, shouting his name.

It takes a village. Several jumped out of their cars and spontaneously tried to establish a human net to trap Bentley. He was too determined for that. Finally, one of the rescuers was fast enough to grab him by the collar as he was about 20 feet from the highway. 

I couldn't believe it. Bentley was caught. 

This Good Samaritan even offered to drive Bentley and  myself back to our car. I needed to walk off the trauma. Bentley trotted along on his three legs as if nothing had happened. The clerk in the convenience store asked me if something was the matter ...

You bet, now I open the car door and all other doors very slowly, with a firm hold on leash. In the car, he rides with the leash on.

 Paul Weiss has been the tipping point.  The Executive Order by the current administration - the third issued - got to us. How vulnerable we all are to power. Forget the grade school lessons about what America is about. Forget how university deans caved during our counterculture protests.  Yes, and forget "rights"  as being sacred. Here's what we now know.
