Relationships: The Two Most Important Phrases

In the tarot The Lovers card is not about romatic love. Not primarily. It's about human relationships. Actually, the difficulty of connecting.

Notice that the two humans are not connected. But they want to be. That's shown by their reaching out to each other. Meanwhile to the side of one there is danger: the serpent. The water, which stands for emotion, is turbulent.

Much of the rest of the card, though, is filled with the "fruits" of a relationship. Literally there is an abundance of blooms. So, despite all the obstacles of our separate worlds it's worth trying to be present with each other in emotional and spiritual space.

This might surprise you but what moves the vibrations in the right direction is not the phrase: I love you. At best, the delivers a warm feeling. What still remains is the proof through action that the feeling is authentic.

What does the daily heavy work of communicating are these two statements:

I was wrong.

I don't know.

Those unleash our humanity, the very imperfect state of being. When we say them we own that we're only human and not pretending to be anything else. That's how we ask those in our lives to accept us as we are. Implicit in that messaging is that we'll also accept them as they are.

Unfortunately, thoughout our formal education, especially with so many high-stakes standardized tests such as the LSAT and GMAT, it's verboten to embrace those two concepts. We have to spit out the right answer, at least the one those in power declares right. We also have to come prepared to showcase how much we know.

No surprise, much of formal education, from pre-school to the Ph.D., is under scrutiny currently. My first career in writing took off when I shook off my Ph.D. training and embraced my humanity.

Thriving in confusing times starts from the inside.
