Overabundance of the Attitude of Gratitude

Seemingly, everywhere I journey there's the mandate: Be grateful. Last night at my support group the usual meeting ritual was ditched. Instead members were asked to go to the podium set up and share what they were thankful about.

Over-socialized, I didn't walk out. I remained there for the entire experience of toxic positivity. Much of that consisted of platitudes. There were no takeaways to equip me to cope with the complexities of the holiday season.

As you are well aware, for too many, times are especially difficult right now. As a tarot reader I bear witness to that suffering. Because human beings are bombarded with messages that they should have an attitude of gratitude they come to me for "permission" to feel the pain of uncertainty about job security, the fragility of a relationship and declining health. 

Allowing people to journey into the negative can move the needle toward a solution. Yes, things are that bad. Therefore maybe we should do something about them. Not simply be distracted by conjuring up an artificial experience of bliss. 

For me one of the most significant cards in the tarot is the Nine of Wands.


That captures a human being in pain. For relief they have to do something. Wands symbolize action in the tarot. 

Think about it. The businesses which are profitable focus on pain points. And what actions are necessary to relieve the organizational suffering. That's how Jane Fraser turned around Citi. Recall that Disney's old-line player Bob Iger mastered the new media landscape. And Paul, Weiss chair Brad Karp has been able to create a dominant presence in London for the law firm. 

Takeaway for 2026: The past is not the future.

Aging - Holding On To Sense Of A Self

  The Wall Street Journal fingers retirement for the epidemic of a loss of self among the aging.  However, the process can kick in as soon as anyone senses they are no longer young. Gone is their youthful self. Denying aging, they don't invest in creating a new self - and continually bringing up to date that identity. We Are All Paul Weiss - And Now We Are Different

 Paul Weiss has been the tipping point.  The Executive Order by the current administration - the third issued - got to us. How vulnerable we all are to power. Forget the grade school lessons about what America is about. Forget how university deans caved during our counterculture protests.  Yes, and forget "rights"  as being sacred. Here's what we now know. The key driven in that EO was that a lawyer who had been a partner at Paul Weiss years ago - Mark Pomerantz - had landed on the US President's enemies list.
