Serial Killer in Our Midst - Not Like on "Criminal Minds " Or Currently in Houston, Not Back in 1969

During 1969, in the university towns of Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Michigan there was a suspected serial killer preying on young women. So?

I was there as doctoral student. Unlike the intense fanfare on former broadcast hit "Criminal Minds" and the current supposed hysteria in Houston, Texas (never believe media), I wasn't freaked. And neither were those in the large number of circles I traveled in. They consisted of myriad generations, not just trusting 20-somethings.

When you're there. at least back then, you could be enveloped in the assumption of being somehow special. Surely those in this dimension and other dimensions (I was already exploring mysticism) got it that I had much to accomplish yet on planet earth. No way could I, so purpose-driven, wind up dead at age 24. 

In addition to the Ph.D. (I was first-generation college so such as wow for the family) and a long future career enlightening minds about the renaissance ideas embedded in the dramas of William Shakespeare, I was on the front lines of civil rights and second-wave feminism. 

Clearly, I was a protected species. Then in August 1969, clean-cut John Norman Collins was arrested. Not much came out. Until later, when there were leaks. The guy was, it was whispered, out of the scripts of "Criminal Law." During his "work" he dismembered the bodies of women. Some said that included female reproductive organs.

Today, I have a different mindset about serial killers, both who murder humans and who crush the human spirit through calculated meanness. On Apple TV+ is a special documentary - "The Hollywood Con Queen" - about a cabal who toyed with aspirations of Hollywood strivers. The victims lost money, of course. They also received a traumatic wounding as they obediently flew around the world and endured phone sex.

As a tarot reader, I currently warn clients about those kinds of serial killers in their midst. No, you can't go with the flow as symbolized in The Chariot tarot card. Grab hold of those reins.

Maybe the world has gotten worse since 1969. Maybe fear has become standard in living our lives. The majority of clients scan everything from work situations to romantic relationships for red flags. They contact me to "review their findings."

And it's not just we ordinary people who seem targeted by some dark voodoo. 

In March 2025 elite law firms such as Perkins Coie and Paul, Weiss were catapulted into a strange force field by White House Executive Orders. Will the soul of the rule of law ever recover from that development?

Right now, I put off a possible visit to Houston. Back in 1969, I didn't discourage college friends to come on and visit me in Ann Arbor. We all laughed about the media headlines. 

Was it a different time? 

Were we different? 

Should a society such as the university community ever feel secure again? Since then, of course, much carnage has happened on university campuses. That ranges from mass shootings to brutal layoffs of tenured professors and staff. 

When I was in Ann Arbor a few weeks ago I was stunned that Mason Hall was not locked. I could enter, no ID. You're asking for "trouble," I thought to myself. No person and no institution, be it higher education or the rule of law, are a protected species.
