God Is Back Great, Christopher Hitchens Isn't
After its founding in 1935, twelve-step program Alcoholics Anonymous eventually realized that using the term "god" could block problem drinkers from joining. So, it substituted "higher power." That usually did the trick.
Essentially that concept involved surrendering to the reality that there were things humans couldn't control. Trying to do just that - control that which can't be changed - could trigger the return to addictive drinking. Many outside AA know of that idea as radical acceptance. I use that frequently in tarot readings and intuitive coaching.
Now, "in the rooms," as meetings are called, there's less of a backing away from the original term "god."
That could be a sign of the growing popularity of Christian evangelism. Meanwhile, Christopher Hitchens who was on the front lines of mocking the belief in "god" per se would, had he lived, been the one mocked. Or much worse.
In 2007, Hitchens achieved unusual literary fame when he published "God Is Not Great." It was #2 on Amazon. There were almost 1,000 reader responses on Amazon. Most bursting with praise. Together with Richard Dawkins he was among the Four Horsemen of the New Atheism.
In the place of a deity-driven system The Four Horsemen reinforced versions of secular humanism. Progressive law firms embraced that point of view. Harvard, which started in 1636 as a training school for clergy, also followed that path. For a while, the Unitarian movement, which is open to all belief systems and advocates social justice, flourished.
That was then.
The shift is back to god. Now more of those previously in other religions such as Roman Catholicism are embracing some form of evangelism. It's so common that I "mirror" many tarot clients by introducing evangelical beliefs and language during sessions. Those fit their comfort zone. They relax and open themselves to what the session could deliver.
On all sorts of Main Streets, such as the gym, strangers share their transformed after joining a Calvary Church.
To find out what my clients were up to I began attending the Calvary congregation in Sierra Vista, Arizona. From the get-go, they handed me a free bible. There was no collection. When I shared my anxiety about relocation I was nudged to the prayer room. I was immersed in the prayer group. There were no hymn books in the pews. All songs were custom-made. One powerful message was self-forgiveness.
That packaging is impressive. Had I not relocated - maybe the prayers helped that - I would have continued.
Hitchens died in 2011. At the time he had even peaked. Now, a rare mention of him is the recent article in Vanity Fair about his literary feud with Gore Vidal. "God Is Not Great" ranks in Amzan hell of the almost 400,000s.
