High School: So, Why Do We Reach Back There ...

"It'll get better in college."

That's what those who sized us up as so disconnected in high school promised us. With the exception of the star athletes, beautiful girls and those elected to leadership positions, most of us experienced the unique pain of feeling we didn't belong. Nor did we assume we deserved to.

College was better. So was participating in the career game.

But, apparently not so much that we could build a solid sense of self, safety and self-love in our post-high school journey. The Atlantic documents that many of us are returning to that time. Or at least assuming that in some ways we are. In tarot readings clients express enthusiasm about attending their high school reunions. Also, there is fear that they will again boomerang back into total insecurity.

So, why is this happening?

From my own life and from what I piece together from what clients share I get it that life has become too much to navigate smoothly. Although high school was bad, it wasn't that bad was it. My circle of friends, for example, cared about me.

That caring continued for years.

Six years after graduation several classmates brought over engagement gifts when I popped in from my doctoral studies in a far-off state to visit my hometown.

A quarter of a century later when I started a communications boutique after years of working corporate I reached out to my former homeroom teacher. For about three years we kept up a relationship.

When I bought a condo I contacted two friends from high school.

More recently when I experienced my career in communications losing runway I leveraged social media to try to re-start something with my "two best friends" from homeroom.

What clients are looking for back then seems to be reassurance that at one time there was something solid. Now things aren't that way at all. Marriage failures eat at them. There's little joy in work. Maybe they should relocate.

Not long ago I drove far to take a look at the building where I spent four years hoping that, as they promised, things would get better.

Actually, what happened was things got different. You probably don't need to reach back into that whatever called "high school" to trigger the gestalt that life is suffering, which eastern philosophy teaches. In different settings in different phases of our life the type of suffering could change. It did. Those who have an edge and glow at high school reunions? They picked up coping skills along the way.
