BoomerVille - Time to Climb Out of Preoccupations with Not Outliving Our Money?

The Dow started out disappointing today but here it is. Up.

45,496.60
USD +95.74 (+0.21%) today

Not much but we in BoomerVille will take it. Gigs are fewer and more of my over-65 clients are either packing it in on chasing employment or starting micro enterprises. Incidentally, many of the latter are successful.

Up to recently, with the bull market, we basked in the real possibility that we could make it into our late 80s and maybe into our 90s without running out of funds. That was a sealed emotion. We let nothing else in.

After all, we've witnessed too many aging who looked much older than their age propped up in front of buildings, getting a few winks. Not us. We'd do whatever it takes to not be them. My car looks like hell but as long as it runs I'll stick with it. Instead of taking on again the expense risks associated with home ownership I'll rent.

Now, with so many service professionals in our orbit losing jobs or fearing that the sealant is fraying.

Today at a branch of the public library I encountered a stunner: Come January that might be shuttered. The staff? In limbo. They don't know if they could apply for other positions in the system or will they be competing for the dwindling number of other kinds of jobs in a tough labor market. Most of them are on the wrong side of the Law of Supply and Demand.

I avoided a kneejerk reaction, rushing in with offering my coaching services pro bono. January is still a long way off. I'll come in the branch more often and feel for the right moment to provide free coaching. Just the thought that they "could need" coaching could set staff into high angst.

Of course, there's also the option of withdrawing into ourselves, screening out the growing suffering. Many spiritual organizations, such as the First Unitarian Church, Toldeo, Ohio, are ramping up community accountability. That was the subject of Rev. Tim Barger's Sunday reflection.

What comes to mind to me, The English Major, is the John Donne poem "No Man Is an Island." That dates back to the Renaissance. So, even centuries ago humans had to be reminded of our interconnectedness. We are told we are social animals. But is the default really to climb into our preoccupations and worry about holding on to our whatever?

Thrown off your game, maybe the first time since you started working? You made all the right moves and then the world moved in another direction.
