Walmart & Overwhelm: $3.26 Facial Cleanser in Locked Case, Can't Reach the Butter

At the end of their coping power. That's what so many clients for tarot readings tell me. It isn't just employment insecurity. Battling with the AI Assistant to get to a human. Or not being able to afford to purchase a single-family house.

Actually, it's the old adage: The broken shoe lace, not something big. That's the tipping point to drive someone over the edge.

One of those broken shoe laces is having to shop in Walmart. Inflation has made that a necessity. Recently it's becoming more and more of a frustration to get the shopping done in Walmart. To check out what my clients have been complaining about I went over to Walmart on Glendale in Toledo, Ohio.

Well, clients were not exaggerating.

The house brand of facial cleanser - price $3.26 - was locked in a case.

That made no sense since expensive cosmetics with brandnames such as Loreal in nearby aisles weren't locked up.

I had to cruise around to find an associate to request an unlock. Guess what? One associate told me that I would have to go to the greeter in front of the store to page someone to unlock. That I did. There was a page. No one showed.

I stopped another associate and asked them to unlock. No, they couldn't or wouldn't since it wasn't their department. However, they did put another page in.

Finally, someone came. I asked why the security measure. The answer: These are high-priced items. $3.26 high priced? Perhaps in the third world.

That was the tip of iceberg.

I am five-feet. I couldn't reach the soda on the top shelf. I had to ask an associate to do that.

The same thing with no-calorie spray version of butter. It was not only on a high shelf. It was pushed to the back.

Lights indicated which check-outs with humans were open. But none had a human standing by the register. They were off jaw-jawing with each other. I had to ask an associate to return to the check-out.

A boomer, this shopping nightmare reminds me of the days when the "telephone company" had been a monopoly. Lily Tomlin did the skit: We are the telephone company and we don't have to care about you. She took on the snippy persona of Ernestine the Operator.

Some experts project that inflation will be sustained. That means Walmart is a must for the majority of those in America. Can we do something about this? The unthinkable did happen to the "phone company." The monopoly was broken up.

Can we make Walmart more responsive to shoppers?

Thriving in confusing times starts from the inside.
