Aging - You're Probably Bumping into the Problem with No Name

Travel the country and stop in a local McDonald's in the early morning. There will be a table or two of older people. What you find out from the waitress is that they are "regulars."

The same kinds of gatherings take place at 12-step meetings, private clubs and old-line churches.

Something seems off.

So far it essentially been the problem with no name. It's about human beings set adrift from the usual orbits, be it a career or rearing a family. Lost? Maybe that's too strong a word for what's going on.

In tarot readings clients present me with this drift as a situation defined as "being bored." The solution they run by me is that they get a job to keep busy, meet people and add to income.

But I know from ongoing tarot sessions with them that doesn't set up inner peace. The unease continues.

That problem with no name, I have come to conclude, is the need for purpose. After the career or long-time job ends the very concrete purpose of earning a living ends. Boom. As institutions change, such as traditional religions losing importance in daily life, those values are no longer sticky. Close friends die. Younger family members are preoccupied with the struggles of middle age. There's a distancing.

So, how to search for purpose?

The first step is to realize it's needed. Human beings can't "just take it easy."

Next, try out new missions. Although noble-sounding, not all will provide direction. One tarot client tried out being a big brother sort of thing. Youth didn't engage. Usually you'll discover you have skills you weren't aware of. Start a foundation to fund "retirement" for horses? Surprise, you're good at raising money.

Third, be open to feedback, much like you were during a career. You can enhance your sphere of belonging, contribution and embracing a new identity. It's such a high to bear witness to your own growth.

Meanwhile, hanging around, yes, it offers a sense of companionship. But it doesn't lift the spirit into knowing what you do matters.

Need insight about who you are now, so that you can move into possibility? That's the role of the tarot. Here is my custom-made DIY guide to providing yourself with your own tarot readings.
