Not Reproducing: Ending the Misery of Being Human
Humans are a very flawed species.
That highly imperfect state the Roman Catholic Church calls "original sin."
William Shakespeare defines it as "cankered in the grain."
Psychologist Carl Jung labels it "shadow self."
Alcoholics Anonymous sums it up as "character defects."
That's what we're told. And we wind up going to ministers, counselors, psychiatrists or bartenders to learn how to handle being such a mess.
Along the way, given our inherent sinfulness, we usually hurt others - as well as ourselves. Recall that Sigmund Freud sized us up as self-destructive. So far, defense lawyers at firms ranging from Kirkland & Ellis to Paul Weiss have become wealthy and powerful bailing us out. It shouldn't be a shocker that the brandname financially secure professional gets nailed for embezzling or insider trading.
It's becoming less radical to consider wiping out this failed creation. Seemingly many different nations are on the way to doing just that through not reproducing.
In an essay in The New York Times Michal Leibowitz sees childlessness as a strategy not to pass on our misery as human beings to others. Often we become aware of how miserable we are through therapy. Also, tarot readings can bring to the surface those harsh realities.
What can accelerate ditching reproduction is how AI will be doing much of the work needed to be done on this planet. Why give life to a generation of human beings who will be unable to make a living? To a growing number of humans around the world that issue has become obvious. Already in some Asian nations as well as here in the US are offspring who, instead of traditional jobs, are permanent live-at-home "handymen" and versions of "care-givers."
A sign of the times, more clients are using tarot sessions to receive "permission" not to have children. To them - and probably in general - it "doesn't feel right" to live a life without producing the next generation. Some even assess that they are letting down the family tree by preventing the name being passed on.
The decision to remain childless is huge. So I don't joke around, as in, "Congratulations, you just saved yourself the $300,000 required to rear a child from birth to age 18." My approach is mostly pragmatic, though. Can you afford it? Do you have a support system for childcare if you still have a career in this era of AI? What are the genetic risks?
The card in the Tarot which might symbolize the end of human beings is the Tower.
