Counterculture 2025 - The Zohran Mamdani Moment (along with Bernie Sanders and AOC)

About 75 percent of calls to me for a tarot reading are about money. There is not enough of it and in the near future there could be even less with a layoff. To supplement, setting up online businesses is becoming more difficult with the changes in search. Meanwhile, the kids, now adults, are still living at home. 

So, it should have been predictable to those in power and those who support power that something like the Zohran Mamdani moment was inevitable. In his campaign for the primary for New York mayor Mamdani promised affordability. His ideology is about a redistribution of wealth.

And here we are: a potential return to the radicalism of the late 1960s counterculture. The language used in media headlines is the language of the counterculture - count the times the term "establishment" is put out there. Andrew Cuomo whom Mandani defeated is boxed as the "establishment" player. Axios notes:

"The shock upset against a onetime establishment powerhouse [Cuomo] comes as potentially dozens of House Democrats are expected to face anti-establishment primary challenges."

The 1960s counterculture gained traction among all generations because it tapped into the frustration with the status quo, everything from old-fashioned sexual mores to careerism to a war judged as immoral. To label the 2025 national mood as "frustrated" would be an understatement. Instead it verges on financial desperation. 

In the tarot the anti-establishment meme is symbolized by the Death card. Not actual death but the collapse of what has been.


Some contend that the values of the counterculture fell apart when the economy went into a severe recession in the mid 1970s.

In contrast, the counterculture of 2025 could gain more traction if there is a recession in 2026. There could be a shift from a movement to the new order of things.

Aging - Holding On To Sense Of A Self

  The Wall Street Journal fingers retirement for the epidemic of a loss of self among the aging.  However, the process can kick in as soon as anyone senses they are no longer young. Gone is their youthful self. Denying aging, they don't invest in creating a new self - and continually bringing up to date that identity. We Are All Paul Weiss - And Now We Are Different

 Paul Weiss has been the tipping point.  The Executive Order by the current administration - the third issued - got to us. How vulnerable we all are to power. Forget the grade school lessons about what America is about. Forget how university deans caved during our counterculture protests.  Yes, and forget "rights"  as being sacred. Here's what we now know. The key driven in that EO was that a lawyer who had been a partner at Paul Weiss years ago - Mark Pomerantz - had landed on the US President's enemies list.
