Laundry Day - No Longer for Socializing

Remember those documentaries we watched in culture class about primitive tribes. A snippet would focus on laundry day. Women from the village spent the time by the river talking and laughing with one another as they washed clothes.

For years that same sense of a get-together also prevailed at the laundromat. Part of the ethos were those bulletin boards on which we hunted for love, roommates and information about what to do after-work.

This Friday, having just blew into this midwest large city from a border town in Arizona I went to the laundromat a few miles from my residential complex. I bypassed the machines on my floor. See, I was hoping to effortlessly meet folks I could talk with. Anyone on anything, after 1,200 miles of isolation on the road. Who doesn't want to complain about laundry day.

No one looked up when I came in. All eyes were on their screens. For the total 90-minute process, no one talked with each other. Incidentally, that laundromat, totally high tech, has the look of absolute efficiency - no bulletin boards with those offbeat messages.

In the tarot, the Lovers Card is about human connection and the obstacles in the way. Only one category is the romantic kind.

The card is so important in the tarot. For instance, authentic bonding opens doors. And not only for companionship and caring. Opportunities for professional success can also be on the other sides of those doors. Knowing someone at the corporation who knows someone, having advocates on the job and attracting mentors to help you navigate mistakes - all involve socializing. Getting out of the solitary self.

Ranging from former US Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama to business leaders such as Disney's Bob Iger and Paul Weiss' Brad Karp - their signatures are broad-based networks. Back some time ago, there were the memes: Never eat lunch alone. Learn the names of the janitors. Send high-quality birthday cards.

There are many reasons being put out there for the current difficulty in finding work. But not enough attention is being focused on the overall falloff in spontaneous socializing. A casual conversation in a laundromat could disclose an opening for a media representative at the university and how to have the edge in applying. That was my start in communications and a career that lasted decades.

Not so long ago, someone or many multiple someones would have looked out the window as I came in and asked how many miles on a gallon does my Smart Car get and how quickly does it accelerate.

That could have led to my sharing that I'm hiring in my tarot practice. Instead, total preoccupation with screens. What is human has become an annoyance.
