ChatGPT - Will It Replace Human Tarot Readers?

OpenAI's ChatGPT and other generative AI platforms are producing not only amazing answers to queries. They have developed a sense of style which makes the content engaging.

Given this accelerating capability of Gen AI I decided to test out its performance in doing tarot readings. 


Into the ChatGPT prompt I keyed that I had pulled the Death card. What did that mean, I asked.

The answer covered all bases, just as an experienced tarot reader would. For example, it started out with the standard explanation that the card is often misunderstood. No, it doesn't signal that a physical death is on the way. Instead, as it reports, the message is:

  • Transformation
  • Endings leading to new beginnings
  • Letting go
  • Rebirth

In addition, it is comprehensive. It interprets both the upright and the reverse meanings. The latter occurs when the card is pulled upside-down. 

No, Gen AI will not necessarily eliminate the role of human tarot readers. People come to the tarot session with the intense need to connect emotionally with another human being and receive immediate input. 

When I was new in doing paid tarot readings I tried to structure the session so that clients would receive my maximum input. Wrong. What they needed more is just having someone listen, then briefly connect the dots for them.

However, in this uncertain economy with such a pull-back on hiring there's reduced demand for tarot services. For a growing number of people it's become a luxury item. Yesterday in this town in the southeast of Arizona I participated in a psychic fair. The traffic was light. Just about six months when I was part of another psychic fair the crowds piled in. 

Also, as in so many other lines of work, there's a glut of talent. Essentially the situation is binary. Either you're a star brand or you better find another profession. That star mandate is becoming pervasive in myriad categories of work. For example, it's predicted that a handful of star coders will oversee the production of AI coders.

 Paul Weiss has been the tipping point.  The Executive Order by the current administration - the third issued - got to us. How vulnerable we all are to power.
