The Resurrection: Can Big Law Transcend Circumstances?

In Christianity, the Resurrection, not the birth of Jesus Christ, is the holiest day of the year. That's because of this: After his death on cross Jesus was transported alive, body and soul, into heaven. Obviously, he transcended a human limitation.

Over the centuries the inspirational message derived from this is that it is possible for all of us to also rise high above circumstances.

As Easter approaches the same challenge of transcendence is thrust upon many large elite law firms encountering the impacts of the Trump administration. They include those making deals such as Paul Weiss and Skadden; those making deals but partially resisting like A&O Shearman; and those totally resisting, leveraging litigation, such as Perkins Coie.

What all face is the unknown. Both the ethos and the business of practicing law, as they have known it, have been disrupted. And there is no little yellow brick road back to what had been. No consultant, no public relations agency and no lobbying organization can hand out ruby red slippers to click for a flight to safety.

In the tarot, that is symbolized by the Death card.

Unlike the Resurrection story in Christianity the Death card in the tarot has nothing to do with earthly death. Its meaning is the end of something and the imperative to deal with that new reality coming into a career or life. Little is known. Maybe nothing is known.

What's occurring to law firms is just the tip of the iceberg what is happening overall in American society.

The tarot readings I do typically involve the unexpected overtaking the over-50. Their child is a failure-to-launch. The sector is downsizing. Early retirement came way too early. That startup everyone said there was a need for never got momentum. The spouse demanded a divorce. Health problems also are coming on way too early.

Christianity and the tarot are platforms for trust in some kind of higher power or prime mover or mystical force field. That has your back. Among the few approaches to alcoholism which is effective - Alcoholics Anonymous - bets the ranch on a belief in an entity outside the human realm. All recommend: "Turn it over," then follow the intuitive guidance and do the next smart thing.

A concrete resource is the bible. That's a chronicle about how humans come through dictatorships, natural disasters, their own ego/myopia and more.

Another resource is a tarot reading. Here on Substack is the DIY guide I developed for you to conduct your own private journey to clarity and strength.
