Compassion: Why Christianity Has Continued Strong
The holidays which are Christianity based continue to dominate in influence in America. Tomorrow is Good Friday and everything from the stock market to the management office of my residential complex is closed. On Sunday, that is Easter, many big boxes like Target are not operating, in respect for the holiest of days in the Christian calendar.
So, we can gain plenty of insight about what resonates in our human lives if we think about why Christianity has such a hold on a nation which seems to be the headquarters for capitalism.
I have a hunch is its fundamental of compassion. The New Testament features myriad examples of how deeply Jesus Christ felt for the plights of human beings. Those ranged from the humiliation of newlyweds when the wine ran out at the wedding feast to the woman whose circumstances forced her into marketing her body.
That high degree of empathy neutralizes the hardened ethos of judging others - under the guise that will help them as well as society to improve.
The evangelical movement as in the Calvery Chapel, in Sierra Vista, Arizona, spreads this good news of understanding our humanity, which includes a very flawed nature. The services champion whatever progress has been made in liberating the self from "who you used to be." If there is more work to be done, then there are one-on-one prayer sessions.
The one of the few effective approaches to putting the fatal disease of alcoholism into remission - Alcoholics Anonymous - also operates on compassion. That's not only for others but also for the self. A program stepped in spirituality it accepts how profoundly flawed human beings are and through the 12 steps creates a "platform" to transcend self-hate. What Christianity calls "sin," it refers to as "character defects." The Calvery Chapel also has a bible-based recovery program incorporating those 12 steps.
The mystical tarot is about gaining clarity about the self. The 78-card deck starts out with The Fool Card. Like life itself it is ambiguous. The focus is on risk-taking, which either could be wise or destructive. But even if the latter, the message is: You are human, that's why you might make foolish choices. The rest of the cards provide a journey into what it means to be human.
