The End of Dating - Many Businesses Will Take a Hit

In the tarot, which dates back to at least the 14th century, The Lovers is a major card. The nuances of navigating romantic relationships have been a compelling concern for humanity for a  long time. At least until recently.

In a very long-form essay The Wall Street Journal reflects on what might become known as The End of Dating. The reality is that more than 50% of females between 18 and 40 are single. And more of them have thrown in the towel on seeking out a romantic relationship. Here's a snapshot of what's trending:

"For young women especially, who tout ... off-the-market status on TikTok and other social media, the focus has shifted toward self-improvement, friendship and the ability to find happiness on their own. Surveys show a decline in teenage relationships, and Gen Z is having less sex than previous generations, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention."

That means that many business sectors associated with any aspect of romantic relationships will be negatively impacted. They will have to retrofit or collapse.

Of course, those include conducting tarot readings. Historically the state of relationships had been a major niche in what we do. However, since post-COVID with the relentless cost-efficiency campaigns and generative AI there is growing concern about getting and hanging on to work. And, less concern about matters of the heart. On phone-in Psychic Interactive advisor Andre specializes in relationships. I wonder how demand for his services will hold up.

Dating apps could become an industry in decline. Already, even before the current falloff in dating there has been disenchantment with this technology. Not one of my clients has been pleased with their investment of time, money and hope.

The hospitality continuum dependent on consumers (as opposed to business) could shrink. Gone could be providing venues for those romantic dinners, weekends and special events. Valentine's Day? Who cares.

Advertisers will have to regroup on positioning romance as a backgrounder for promotions. Instead, they could feature relationships with our four-legged companions. Those commercials involving animals always steal the show during the Super Bowl. Saturday night is my special time with Max.

Even law firms can take a hit. With romance becoming an anachronism there could be fewer investigations and management of actual lawsuits for alleged harassment, as were high-profile assignments for Paul Weiss. And what about the business of an employment firm such as Sanford Heisler filing litigation on behalf of plaintiffs terminated because of alleged love relationships in the office or at the university?

This post-dating trend is overdue. Romantic love is a meme invented in medieval times. That is, the 12th century. Before that, a joining-together had been an economic necessity for survival. Think the division of labor. Both physical labor and domestic tasks such as cooking and care for the sick were required for raw survival.

For those still in the dating loop much of that mythology has shifted back to transactional. There is calculation: How much would this partner contribute to the household and what is the value added to my career? In tarot sessions the language now used in talking about love relationships is less rooted in emotion and more in business. Enraged, clients will report the lousy ROI for four years of dating.
