Why Is It So Hard to "Walk Away?"

Romance, a career path, your hometown or even an engrossing hobby like piloting planes which has gotten too expensive. In Tarot readings the Ah-Ha moment comes when it is obvious to clients that they have to "walk away" from all that.

That recognition - as well as its difficulties - is symbolized in the Tarot by the Eight of Cups card. The human being who has made the decision and has taken the action faces mountains to climb, along with uncertainty. However the hope of success comes through in that the water, which stands for emotion, is calm, not turbulent.

What I have found is the chief reason for the difficulty of Walking Away is the sunk cost. Over and over again, clients mention that the romance had gone on for eight years; there are still student loans from business or law school; and what about all those friends from grade school in the hometown?

That is becoming easier, though, when clients bear witness to how the current overall volatilty in just about every aspect of life is unhinging so many. It's not just them. Actually, there can be gratitude that their transition isn't more bumpy.

Another factor creating reluctance about Walking Away is the need to form new social connections and networks. In a divorce, for example, there usually is side-taking. Make the shift from content-creation to law school, it's imperative to put together a new intel/contact/support network.

The third obstacle is that so much of the past becomes useless baggage - almost a liability. The Ph.D. in literature who had developed great expertise in Shakespeare has to shift that passion to a hobby after they create a career path in management consulting. It could lessen their brand equity in the new line of work if they seem preoccupied with literature.

And, the fourth is, of course, the uncertainty. There is no predicting if the risk will pan out. That's why the Tarot major cards begin with The Fool. Yes, risk has become necessary in the course of our 21st-century lives. But taking it doesn't guarantee the expected results.

As a Tarot reader I am cautious when I guide struggling human beings through change. The process demands patience with oneself and with how the world operates.
