Great That You Walked Away, Now Lose Yourself

In Tarot reading sessions the joy and relief of those who Walked Away from negative situations are palpable. I join them in celebrating their courage and strength. Taking the exit ramp could be from an unsatisfying/doomed career, toxic relationship, a lifestyle, mindset, geographical location, or even an addiction.

Then that form of euphoria or what is called in 12-step programs the "pick cloud" deflates. In the Tarot the Eight of Cups is not only about Walking Away. Part of the message is that the path is now filled with unknowns. Ahead could be months or even years of being lost. That is symbolized by the image of mountains. Some heavy-duty exploration could be ahead to locate new solid ground.

In America, that state of being carries a stigma. After all, from the get-go we should all know our direction, so goes the conventional wisdom. The book exposing how that stunts the growth of college students - Excellent Sheep - showcases that dynamic.

However, those who accept that they will wander around lost open themselves to spotting what could be fresh paths. Amazing ones.

The professional anonymous networks such as Fishbowl, Reddit and Blind are jam-packed with those who were laid off or even fired. Those who let-that-be and pick up temporary/gig assignments to pay the bills usually eventually reset in a better fit for how to earn a good living.

Those who push to replicate what had been frequently continue in distress. I coached a junior management consultant who had been forced out of two firms. They came to a Tarot reading struggling to replicate being an analyst in a prestigious firm. That is, they didn't allow themselves to be lost. That, in their way of seeing things, would have piled on more shame.

Actually, being lost can free people from the oughts of prior conditioning, opening them to extreme possibility.

Jesus Christ let himself roam the desert for three years. Only after that he started his public life of sharing the good news of a transcendent way of living.

Steve Jobs found his leadership self after being shut out in the cold from the enterprise he started. We all know what then happened.

In a Business Insider interview head of law firm Paul, Weiss Brad Karp "owned" that he was confused about whether to go for renewing his contract. That surrendering to not having a clear direction could have been the platform for catapulting the firm to total "hot" when Karp did decide to go for another term as chair.

Meanwhile, at Disney would boomerang CEO Bob Iger find solid footing if he Walked Away from what had been success formulas. And had the confidence to be lost. The oldest business fundamental is that nothing fails like success.

There is that iconic lyric by Eminen "Lose Yourself."
