In "God's Country" Sandra, Like Her Mother, Can't Come Back from Trauma - Tarot's Devil Card
The legacy of Category 5 Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans
hangs on, at least with Sandra and with her mother who had just died. A former
cop back there and now a university teacher in Montana, this middle-aged woman
of color remains obsessed with how many of "her people" were left to
drown.
That underlying mindset from the past and how it destroys
her are depicted in the 2022 film "God's Country." Currently it's on Hulu. Within days of her
mother's death Sandra self-destructs. That ranges from endangering her job to
multiple murders.
In the Tarot, the Devil card captures all that. It is the
opposite of the Temperance card. The Devil is about synchronicity. It's the
projection of a human being's inner darkness onto external reality.
Like so many who become a closed system, Sandra isn't aware
of that. Therefore even though law enforcement warns her that her behavior
won't get her anywhere in that remote area she escalates it. That downward
spiral is kicked off by demanding that hunters not park their pickup on her
property.
The extent of Sandra's unraveling is atypical. We read
about situations like that in the media because it's not the usual. But its
pattern is tragically common. Trauma takes a hold and won't let go. Human
beings no longer have the ability to adapt to new circumstances. They become,
yes, what is called "stuck."
The classic example of that are the professionals who lose
big jobs. Even if they land another lucrative influential position so many
parts of them remain frozen in time.
How to break free? That's what the Tarot's Eight of Cups is
about. Some call it The Walking Away card. I find it more useful to approach it
as The Walking Toward. That's not easy because uncertainty is ahead. The past,
no matter how horrific, is a known.
