As a Tarot Reader I Anticipate the Hit Generative AI Will Deliver to the $2.5 Billion Sector, But ...
"AI replacing psychics as 'fortune telling' droids put tarot readers out of work"
That's the headline in the Daily Star today.
I have zero illusions that the human anything (as marketing folks contend) will insulate my line of work from competing with AI - or at least AI's reputation out there about what it can accomplish for some of those who traditionally would have ponied up the fees for a one-to-one tarot reading. The more generative AI learns about what that market segment needs the better it can simulate not only a human voice but also the right emotional responses.
But there are myriad other market segments within psychic services. Those are less vulnerable to ChatGPT 4.
One, for example, is the lawyer who needs a tarot expert to pick up the energy around the judge and jury on a specific day of the trial. Several times that was my assignment. The lawyer was so pleased that he referred his colleagues to me.
Another market are those who need to look into a pair of eyes which reflects back their pain. Today at the public library a woman and I got to talking about how print books essentially are an anachronism. Then the conversation veered into how she, now unemployed, felt like an anachronism. In the parking lot at a picnic table I gave her a reading. No, it wasn't free. She was quite willing to pay.
Then there are the very unique dynamics in a romantic relationship. Each party comes into that relationship with the baggage of all other relationships going way back to childhood. Can AI ever manage so many variables? The lion's share of a psychic's business deals with those.
Also are the escape and the feeling of being special provided by coming to the psychic's shop for such a personalized service. It's a type of mystical masage.
Oh, and the rituals. The Roman Catholic Church had been brilliant in its use of ritual to transport the faithful into other dimensions. Tarot readings entail shuffling cards, calling on Spirit, having clients choose the cards, incense, candles and often drop-ins by the deceased. Those in themselves, even before the session is underway, can create a lightness of being. Typically clients exit with a spring to their step.
For 2023, MarketResearch.com estimates revenues for the psychic services industry will total about $2.3 billion. That will probably pan out, even with hits delivered by AI. The infrastructure for the sector, ranging from deep listening to the rituals, is too solid to be blown up, at least not easily or in the near future.
Starting at the end of this month, I will spend Saturdays doing readings in a resort area. Tourists expect that as part of their experience of "being away." Once I get a handle on that context I might be able to transfer the skills to providing the service on cruise ships.
Meanwhile, fed into the ChatGPT prompt the generic query: How much will generative AI hurt my tarot reading business. This was the response:
"Ultimately, while generative AI might introduce some competition, it's important to focus on what sets your tarot reading business apart and how you can continue to offer value to your clients in ways that AI cannot replicate. Adaptation, innovation, and clear communication with your clients will be key to navigating potential challenges posed by AI in your industry."
