They Treated You Unjustly at Work and You're Going to Do Something about That - Maybe Not (not the injustice part, not the push-back)

"...reality is generally ambiguous. Most of the things we encounter in life exist in a gray area."  From the Chapter "Ace of Swords" in the 2021 book TAROT FOR CHANGE by Jessica Dore.

In most things in life, including the operation of the official legal system, there are rarely absolute answers. Few legal decisions cannot be appealed.

As we journey from the black and white thinking of children to adulthood we accept gray. We wind up marrying X or Y even though they aren't a perfect fit with our criteria for a soulmate.

However. we kind of circle back to childhood rigidity when we go to work. Especially when we are new to the job or the contract assignment. It is then that we tend to grab onto hardened categories of justice and injustice. The Ace of Swords card tries to steer us in another direction.

Not exiting childlike mindsets can start you off on the wrong foot at work and even invite retaliation. The latter could take the form of a PIP - Proposal to Improve Performance.

(Identity Masked). Just out of training for a call-center position for a major corporation, this man had been reprimanded twice for not responding to the lights quickly enough. That second time came with the warning of a "write-up" if there was a third instance.

"Unfair."

That was his preoccupation all day. That night he didn't sleep well. He arrived at work early enough to duck into HR. He shared his grievance.

"It was my first few hours on the floor."

What he didn't know was that there was escalating pressure at that center to turn around more calls within a certain number of seconds. The calls they didn't answer were programmed to go to a third party which billed a premium rate to handle the surplus. That process was reducing profits for the corporation.

Soon enough the man felt the chill. The supervisor he had reported was well-loved, despite her direct manner. He became distracted. A PIP materialized. There was no going back to establishing a first impression as a team member who can roll with it.

At work when you are new, where so much is at stake, it is imperative to view supervisory actions through the lens of no right answers. Things just are. In time you might be able to gain access to the reasons things are done that way. But you may not.

Takeaway: As the Ace of Swords messages: Your very best thinking about justice on your job or in a contract gig could do you in worse than subpar work.
