Lawyers Preoccupied with Layoffs - A One-Card Tarot Reading Can Bring Clarity

 The IPO crash has frontloaded the preoccupation with layoffs at law firms. So far, there aren't any formal reductions-in-force in practices related to IPOs. Overall, lawyers have less work. No one can rule out stealth layoffs, that is, those in which the termination is positioned and packaged as performance-based.

So, predictably, there is a posting on Subreddit Big Law about layoffs. The specific inquiry is this: Who will be on the chopping block early in the game? Here is the thread.

There are three targeted groups:

  • Those with low hours.

 

  • Seniors ruled off the island - that is, those without a shot at partnership.

 

  • The Not Likables. Likability is a form of power and they don't have it. 

Also, those contributing comments point out that it if terminated that doesn't have to blow up a career. On the interviews for the next opportunity there might not be a lot of attention of why you're no longer with that law firm. Instead you will focus on selling yourself as perfect for that particular slot.

 Paul Weiss has been the tipping point.  The Executive Order by the current administration - the third issued - got to us. How vulnerable we all are to power. Forget the grade school lessons about what America is about. Forget how university deans caved during our counterculture protests.  Yes, and forget "rights"  as being sacred. Here's what we now know.
